What are the barriers to volunteering?

A range of reasons are given by people for not participating in volunteering-related activities. In the 2010/11 Citizenship Survey the main reasons people gave for not volunteering were broadly related to having other calls on their time (eg, work, family/caring, study or other commitments), with lack of awareness of opportunities the second most common, and age (either feeling too old or too young) the least common reason – cited by only 4% of respondents.
