Youth volunteering and democratic engagement

18th October, Birkbeck, University of London

Professor John Annette

This was the first seminar in a series organised by IVR in partnership with the ESRC and Birkbeck, University of London. The series focuses on different aspects of youth volunteering and this first event explored the place that volunteering by young people could – or indeed should – have in developing ideas of democratic engagement and citizenship.

This event marked the launch of IVR’s research partnership with Birkbeck.

The seminar saw presentations by:

  • Dr Rachel Brookes, Professor of Education at Brunel University,
  • Paul Oginsky, CEO of Personal Development Point and Youth Advisor to the Conservative Party,
  • Sophie Livingstone, CEO of City Year.

The seminar was chaired by Professor John Annette, Professor of Citizenship and Lifelong Learning and Pro Vice Master for Lifelong Learning and Engagement, Birkbeck, University of London.
