Students, Volunteering and Social Action 1960-2000: A Witness Seminar
On 24 June 2010 the Institute for Volunteering Research and Student Hubs hosted a witness seminar (an oral history group interview) that brought together former student volunteers and activists from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. The speakers are listed below.
Graham Allcott - Student volunteer at Birmingham University from 1998 to 2001 and Chief Executive of Student Volunteering England 2004-2007.
Dr Mike Aiken - Student Community Action worker in Bangor, Nort
h Wales in the 1980s and from 1982 employed as Joint Co-ordinator at the national Student Community Action Development Unit.
Dr Alan Barr, OBE - Early founder of the Student Community Action movement at Birmingham University 1967-69, National Organiser SCA and Chair NUS SCA Advisory Group 1969-71.
Mike Day - Volunteer with Community Action at Lancaster University from 1977 until 1982 and went on to work for the National Union of Students.
Kelly Drake - Director of Student Community Action Development Unit, afterwards known as Student Volunteering UK from 1990s until 2002.
Erica Dunmow - Student Community Action Worker in Cambridge from 1980-81 and was a founder member of the new SCA National Committee set up in 1980. Co-Worker at Student Community Action Development Unit in 1984 until 1991.
Dr Debbie Ellen - Involved in LinkUp at Sussex University from 1980 until 1983 and from 1984 Community Action Worker at UMIST.
Richard Lott - A student volutneer 1993 until 1997 heavily involved in Third World First.
Dr Nick Plant - Involved in community action in the mid-1970s in empty property campaign work in partnership with the local branch of Shelter in his university town, Southampton.
Ray Phillips - Student President at Birmingham University, 1968-69 and supported Alan Barr in launching Student Community Action.Subsequently, the National Co-ordinator for Student Community Action at the National Union of Students (SCANUS).
