Matthew Hill

Matthew HillMatt is a Senior Research Officer at the Institute for Volunteering Research where he has worked since 2008. Matt's role is part of a two year project exploring volunteer management in palliative care funded by Dimbleby Cancer Care and Marie Curie Cancer Care. He is also involved in the evaluation of City Year London and the International Citizen Service Pilot.

Outside of IVR Matt is currently working towards his PhD at Northumbria University exploring issues of power in voluntary organisations that deliver public services. Professor Irene Hardill and Nick Ockenden are supervising this PhD. 

Matt has a BA Hons in Economics and Philosophy and an MSc in Development Studies, which also drives his interest in international volunteering and helped to inform his involvement in shaping the UN’s State of the World Volunteering Report.

Matt has volunteered for 5 years with Maytree, a sanctuary for the suicidal, and also helps organise a 6-aside football league.
